I have an issue with my 14-24 mm AF-S f2,8 lens.

Primary Symptoms:

  • AF Stall/Slip: When activating autofocus, the SWM attempts to engage, resulting in a slight "twitch" of the focus ring, but the internal elements fail to move. The camera eventually times out.
  • Mechanical Manual Override: Holding the focus ring or manually rotating it during the AF attempt temporarily restores functionality, suggesting a loss of friction in the internal coupling.
  • Tactile Play: There is a noticeable "gap" or loss of resistance at specific points during manual rotation of the focus ring, indicating potential wear in the friction clutch or helicoid tolerances.

When I hold the focus ring it obviously cannot AF stall or slip, and then the AF focus works perfectly. But it feels totally wrong to hold the focusing ring, especially because I never have to do that with any other lens that I own (plenty of them AF-S, primes, zooms, you name it).

What can be the reason for this? If I attempt disassembly, what should I focus on? Could it be the focus brush that needs to be replaced or cared for? Or is this a symptom of how the focus motor is dying?

The fine pix (FUJI FILM) 2980 camera has only three years.

Used little, it never has been dropped or has been dropped, use ordinary alkaline batteries and non-rechargeable batteries.

There are no signs of oxidation on the battery terminals and whenever you finish using the machine I remove the batteries.

Shutter button and zoom switch do not work anymore. I have dissassembled the camera as far as removing the back half and the PC board inside but still can't get to the shutter button and zoom switch to find out what the problem could be. Camera is a Lumix FZ100.

And was informed my instas customer service that it sounds like a firmware problem as it wouldn’t do anything when connected to power and no battery and that I should send it back to clarify and as it’s not in warranty I wouldn’t be getting it back.

So has anyone else had this or anyway of fixing it?
