A few weeks ago, I decided to replace my macbook’s battery - after 5ish years, the only thing about this laptop (the best laptop ever made) was the battery life drained quickly. I ordered a battery + kit from iFixit, and replaced the battery. I conditioned the battery, but every time it discharged it would jump from above 50% battery to 7% battery, then die shortly after (i.e. a very discontinuous discharge). I received a replacement battery for the replace from iFixit, and replaced again. However, I’m still having the same problem with the battery jumps . I figure it’s unlikely to be the battery, but am unsure what else could could be causing the issue. I’ve reset PRAM and SMC.

MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2009: Internal hard drive disk not recognized

Hi there,

My internal hard drive disk has stopped working on my Macbook.

The hard drive is not recognized at boot up, so I get the famous question mark. I tried to connect another hard disk and got the same error message. So I guess the problem comes from the logic board?

When I try to access it from the external bootable drive using Disk Utility I can't see it either.

The disk I'm using is good, and it works when connected with USB (this is what I'm running now). But of course I would prefer to put it inside and connect it with SATA.

Now, I'm wondering what I should do. A new logical board is expensive, and it would be too bad to change it completely, because everything else is working perfectly. So, I'd like to get some advice, maybe for how to check the connectors, change the disk controller or add a new one, or whatever can help to get a more practical solution.

Thank you for your help.

How can I do a fresh install of 10.11 with the new ssd in without a backup ? If you are wondering why I don't want to restore from a back up its cause the backups are too big and would fill the new drive full.

MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015: MacBook Pro Shuts down randomly

Two days ago I wanted to continue with my video project on my MacBook Pro. I opened it (I don't shut it down) and it was off. I thought maybe the battery was dead and I didn't charge it.

So, when I put my MacBook in the charger and click the on button it went on for 5 sec and then turned off. I pushed the button again and now I could login I looked at the battery it was still 80% so I thought that's odd.

Then when I logged in it shuts off again. I've tried for several times to turn it back on sometimes it didn't even turn on and sometimes it turns on and then it shuts off again after seconds.

I went to a computer store but they didn't know what was going on the guy said that he couldn't find anything weird in my MacBook (software) yes of course when the guy looked at it it worked. Until it suddenly shuts down and I was like: 'Yes that's the problem!' But he had no clue. All he said was: 'send it back to apple'

So another thing: I'm traveling and need my MacBook for my work (I'm a colorist and work in the film industry) I need it everyday.

Maybe something important: last June I Accidentally closed my MacBook with the charger between so my display broke. I replaced it, cost me lots of money, and then after 2 months it was loose (I haven't fixed it yet, been more than one month now)

I can move my display up and down for at least 1cm. I can also detach the black bar underneath the display from the display, think this used to be glued together.

I don't know if this might be the problem from the MacBook shutting down randomly.

Ps. Sometimes my MacBook doesn't shut off completely and the fans start making extreme noises. It's like my MacBook is frozen.

I've turned it on again and clicked the D that brought me to some sort of check. It said: nothing is wrong.

Now it just restarts randomly. It's better but still not 100%

MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2009: MacBook suddenly has inverted/flickering vertical strip on the screen

I have an aluminum 13' MacBook (A1278) which all of a sudden developed a 1.5' wide vertical inverted, flickering, and interlaced strip running uniformly down the screen. There wasn't any associated drop or other damage to the computer that preceded this. Of note, the left edge of the strip starts exactly at the midline of the screen and extends 3.5 cm to the right -> I'm hoping this might indicate it's a loose cable responsible for carrying the signal to that specific real estate of the screen.

Oddly enough, for the first few hours it would go away if I restarted the computer, but would reappear if I adjusted the tilt of the screen. Now restarting, jostling, shaking, etc has no effect.

Photo of defect

Any ideas? I suppose I'll do a little exploratory surgery today and see if I can re-seat any ribbons/cables that go to the screen....I'm hoping I don't have to replace the whole thing. Any tips would be incredibly appreciated....I'm in the middle of exams, and this is not making studying very easy!

Cheers!

For what it's worth, I was just able to fix mine with the help of this list.

For me, the key was trying to start the computer with no RAM installed. After that succeeded, I went ahead and put a single RAM chip back in, and it started up.

What started the problem was the main battery getting too depleted, which seems to have an impact on other parts of the system.

MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar Late 2016: Screen issues, Back light dims & goes out

I have a 2016 macbook touchbar 13" and one month after the 1 year warranty I noticed this "stage lights" issue. 5 months later the issue is worse now.

Yesterday, I noticed that when I tilt the screen back beyond the 90 degree angle the screen goes black. Then if I move it back to 90 degrees it gets illuminated. But the angles vary a lot. Sometimes it gets illuminated only If I move it back to 60 degrees and sometimes a little more than 90 degrees.

One important thing to mention: when I open the lid until 60 degree there's no stage light issue, the display is clean, with no shadows. The issue starts at 60 degree with the shadows appearing and screen brightness being lowered until it goes black.

It works perfectly with an external monitor. So it must be something with a damaged display cable, right? Can it get worse than it already is, like damaging the logic board or something?

I can't afford an expensive repair (new display) so if I'm safe keeping the lid closed, I'm planning to use it as a desktop.

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2010: Logic Board Failure due to Nvidia Graphics processor GT330M

Hi all,

I purchased my Macbook pro 1.5 years ago in Aug 2010 (did not purchase Apple care for extended warranty) . Started getting kernel panics recently and after every panic attack the machine would beep 3 times repeatedly. However, after not bothering with it for many hours (busy with work) I would be able to turn the machine on and use it for 5-15mins and would experience another kernel panic. I recently took it to Genius Bar in UK and was advised it was a 3rd party conflict (Sophos anti-virus) issue. I was advised to delete Sophos and everything would be fine. But it wasn't the case and I had to travel to go again. This time I was advised that the technicians would run a detailed diagnostic test and they suspected that it was a Logic Board or RAM issue. Today I was advised by a store personnel that it was a "Logic Board " fault and had to be replaced (costs approx 400GBP). I wanted the technical details of the fault emailed to me so I could get a second opinion. Instead, I get an email advising me that I have to physically go to the store to get the technical details of the fault. This is so disappointing. It has lasted just 1.5 years and as a student I just don't have the funds to get this fixed (could probably get a decent PC for that money).

On Monday the Apple store informed me it was my Logic Board. I wanted to find out the exact details of what's wrong with the Logic Board and waited to hear from them for two days. Initially they said that I could not get this by email. Yesterday when I rang them again, I was advised that they were running more tests to make sure it was the Logic Board.

Today I get a call advising me that their diagnostic test LO AND BEHOLD highlighted that their "GRAPHICS CARD" ( Nvidea ) had failed. When I pointed out the whole "NVIDEA-MACBOOK PRO SAGA" genius bar member ( she was nice and empathetic) said to me that the problem with my GRAPHICS CARD was not the same problem. So, I asked her to specify what the problem was with " my graphics card". Apparently, they do not have the techinical knowhow (even it went to their factory or some sort of centre) to find out what was wrong with the GPU and all they do is plug in a gadget to test it. This seems like a party line that they have to tow. All in all, I will have to fork out 400pounds to get this fixed.

However, I am not going to accept this and am going back to witness the diagnostic test. I would like to arm myself with as much info as possible about this whole NVIDEA saga. Spoke to Apple Centre and they were very helpful. However, the ultimate decision to put in a new Logic Board FoC depends on the store manager.

People with new Macbook pro's (Nvidia GT330M) and not just the old GeForce 8600M GT seem to experience this as well. Help and suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks

MacBook Pro: How do you Solve Service Battery Warning

I am getting the "service battery" warning in the battery drop down menu on my MacBook P. It comes on with all three batteries that I use. The battery seems to have a much shorter life now. They were purchased at different times and one just a year ago so I am kind of surprised they would all die at the same time. Do I just need to replace them or is this a sign for a power management problem?

MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017: Black shadows from the bottom of the screen

I bought my MacBook Pro 2017 in September and after a month or so of use I got my display like in the photo. I called the support and even after all of the possible "software" actions they can't solve my problem, so it appear to be hardware related.

Anyone has something like that? How they solved your problem?
