Yeah kernel panic might be behind that because whenever the OS fails to recover from an error it shuts down to safeguard the system. Just think if you have install any recent software that might be troubling your system.  Also run disk utility to check the file permissions and if needed repair them to avoid any future trouble. There are also other factors behind KP like a hardware incompatibility.
