1) booting the notebook in a darkened room and shinning a flashlight onto the display. If you see a very dim Windows desktop then the display inverter is likely to have failed.
2) connecting an external display to the video out interfce on your notebook to see if Windows and your notebook are booting up normally without isplaying on your LCD display.
