I managed to fix this by disconnecting and reconnecting the cable at the bottom of the screen (not the cable that connects to the logic board the on that is under the plastic cover at the bottom of the LCD - it's a plastic cable with a pull tab). It's a complicated repair, but if you're experienced with repairing electronics this a pretty simple and cheap fix.
