One way to find unread email is to use the search folders feature.  It depends on how the Outlook is set up, most of the time it is on the left side under Inbox, Outbox and Sent folders.  The left side folder view may be minimized, click  on the > arrow on top and then click on the pin icon to keep the folders in view.  The search folders contain several sub folders, one of which is Unread Mail.
