There are a few different ways one can damage their Ethernet port. A common one is the small contact wires get mangled when you insert the connector. I would start off looking very carefully into the socket to see if the contact wires are in the correct position.
-Improper grounding of your system and the Ethernet Hub/Router device or devices can create a hot lead so when you plugged in the mis-wired cable you burnt the transformer unit.

Hopefully you didn’t damage your logic board. I would make the effort to get an AC outlet tester to check all of your outlets you are using and make sure the breaker panel is properly grounded to either a metal pipe leading out of the building (water or sewer) or you have a grounding rod. Make sure the grounding cable back to the panel is not corroded and in good shape, if not get an electrician in to repair it.
Think about getting surge suppressors and a UPS for your system to help protect it.
