Seems like the issue is actually related to the fact that the dock doesnt carry a data signal via USB for some reason. I’ve found the answer in this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/PS3/comments/5k0lit/charging_the_ps3_controllers_through_a_wall/

and then tested it for myself.
