Let's try this again, the focus is on the keyboard and trackpad not working as such the battery which sits on top of the ribbon cables (looking in from the bottom) can press against then causing issues.

I was hoping to get a clue from the condition of the old battery if it was blistered in either the middle or left cells looking at the battery from here (battery is made up of four cells)
