The disk is probably using the new ***Apple File System (APFS***) file system. The disk is format in APFS. Your older Mac only supports the “***Mac OS Extended (Journaled)***” format. So you older Mac will never be able to read the files on drive, even if detects the drive itself. For comparison Windows has exFAT, MS-DOS (FAT), Fat32, NTFS file system. Solution: Find a friend who has a new Mac OS. Connect the drive using usb cable and copy all files to his HD for a while. Take your drive back to your system. Format it using whatever option you have in you OS, most likely Mac journaled. Dont use ***Journaled encrypt***, its slows the system. Then go to your friend with another HD external and bring your files back. You’ll need an external usb drive to accomplish all that.
