This is probably not much of a problem anymore, but I'll post if this helps someone. I had the same problem; had not used the camera in a few years and left the battery in and it swelled. I first removed the SD card then used a pair of chain-nosed pliers (long needle-nosed pliers that are bent 90°) to grab the battery and pull it out. Lesson learned, take the battery out if you're not using the camera.
