The upper case surface needs to be spotless for the adhesive pad to work properly and it does need a bit of pressure as well.
I don’t like the way Apple did things with the first Retina systems instead I use 3M’s Command adhesive strips applying two strips per cell after cleaning off all of the adhesive on the plastic sheet (leaving it attached to the battery) and uppercase. I find Goo Gone does a good job, then wipe the area again with 90% isopropyl alcohol to remove the last traces of the GooOff as it too will prevent good adhesion.
