Problem connecting MacBook to TV

Hello I've just tried to use a mini display port to vga male to connect directly to the TV but cannot get my macbook to recognise that there is another display even with everything connected properly, powered on and in the right mode everytime I click detect displays nothing happens. I have also powered it on when all connected and changed the resolution and still nothing.

I don't know whether I am doing something wrong I know the cable isn't faulty...
