My display is a multitude of colored lines, but when I attach an external monitor, I have a fine display on that monitor. What do I need to fix/replace? I happen to have a "spare" LCD from an iBook, which seems to be the same part number. Thanks!

Yes you can swap the 12" LCD panel between 12" iBook and 12" PowerBook so try the swap. If you get the same lines onscreen then replace the PB LVDS cable.
