iPhone 4- Headphones or earbuds still work when plugged in. Loudspeaker at base works if speakerphone chosen. Earpiece has suddenly stopped working. Had been using headphones just prior. Is this a function of the headphone jack not releasing the sound circuit back to the earpiece or the earpiece itself just died? So do I need a headphone jack assembly or just an earpiece speaker?

Disclaimer! If my troubleshooting steps make the device worst then it already is, I am not...i repeat, I will not be responsible for it. So use these steps at your OWN RISK!:
I work as advance tech special for a wireless company. What normally work for that specific device is:
1) Plug a headphone into the device
2) Make a test call and make sure you are able to ear call on headphone
3) Toggle the Speaker on & off and make sure you are able to hear call on the headphone
4) Toggle Speaker OFF
5) Remove headphone
6) You should be able to hear from earpiece now.
7) If all fails - Restore via iTunes!

Well, it was not the earpiece. Ordered one but through trial and error determined that by holding the phone upside-down and re-inserting the headphone jack several times I could get the earpiece to work again eventually. As long as I didn't use the headphones or earbuds the earpiece worked for days. It always failed right after the headphones were unplugged. Ordered the headphone jack and volume control cable and tore the whole thing apart to replace it. Seems to be working fine now.... certainly don't want to do that again anytime soon!!
Since I had the phone apart I replaced my funky Dock Connector too.

When absolutely none of this worked for me I took a screwdriver and whacked the !&&* out of the top of my phone. NOW IT WORKS! Probably will not work for most people though. Of course I already reset my phone losing my settings and my purchased ringtones forever. I HATE Apple!

Thankyou sooooooooooo much!
I tried all the other solutions i found online, compressed air into the headphone socket, pushing the jack in and out, squeezing the speaker face and even a restore.
I was pretty much ready to start crying when i found this!

Ok so my outter speaker works perfectly fine, but the ear piece speaker doesn't work properly, it fries and make baffling sounds, when I make and receive calls I have changed my speaker, I have updated to 8.1.1, also restore my phone. But it works perfectly fine when I use viber and Magic jack, or even Facebook messenger so what's the problem??

Try switching to Android... That's always worked for me.. Just saying, lol.

First restart your device, then blow the headphone jack and plug your headphone, listen to something first , than unplug it, and test it out
