"iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch because it is locked"

I tried everything and I still get the "ITunes could not connect to the ipod touch because it is locked with a passcode. You must put the passcode on the ipod before it can be used with itunes" message. Please, any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Tatiana, follow the solution given by Tristan on this question "you will have to put your iPod into DFU Mode and Restore:

Connect your iPod to your computer

Turn your iPod off

For 10 seconds, hold both the Home and Power buttons

While still holding the home button down, release the power button only! Continue to hold the home button down for an additional 10 seconds.

After the dialog box explaining that the iPod was found in recovery mode has been closed, restore your iPod" Upvote Tristan's answer if this was helpful. Hope this helps, good luck.

oldturkey03, thank you, I tried your advise too, just didn't work. I get the exact message :"ITunes could not connect to the ipod touch because it is locked with a passcode. You must put the passcode on the ipod before it can be used with itunes". Is there anything left to try??? Thank you

You sure were in DFU? iTunes did not recognize it as an iPod that needs in recovery mode? Sometimes it is difficult to get into DFU mode, you may have to try a couple of times....

tarafından

what i do to bring it to recovery but not DFU, turn off ipod and hold home and plug into itunes at the same time until a iTunes symbol appears on the ipod and iTunes says detected in recovery.

What if my ipod's home button isn't working? Any other way to recovery my device?

I did this and my ipod is not turning on!!!!

If you get that password message (assuming you are restoring due to a lost password), it means your iPhone unexpectedly exited the recovery mode before iTunes could download updates and start installing on your phone. When you notice your phone suddenly leave recovery mode and reboot while updates are still downloading, press and hold both buttons again and wait for it to re-enter recovery mode. iTunes will prompt you to restore again, but the download will continue from where it left off. This happened 3 times during one restore of a 3GS, and it's probably due to an automatic recovery mode time-out in phones that are password protected.

The comment above is THE comment to solve the issue. Prior to this comment I did not realise that the error message was in fact a timeout message on the iPad! I just re-entered recovery mode on my iPad and think clicked Cancel (as the download was already initiated by the first recovery mode attempt). This repeated every 15 mins during a 2 hour+ download; after which I was able to Restore successfully. Thank you "franklink2" for posting...

Yes. Just keep doing it again, it will eventually finish. (During recovery, there should be a progress bar on the device to help you estimate how far along you are in the firmware download - then it switches to a progress bar at the top of iTunes to show the progress for the installation)

Very helpful, thanks for this!

Thank you SO much!!!! Nothing else worked, and you had a critical piece to the instructions. I kept walking away and wondering why I'd get that message. I just sat with the iPad and periodically touched the screen or the home button. Viola! No message.

After all different tries with different solutions...This now works for me:

Step#1: Clear registered devices:

Open iTunes

-> click on "store" in the upper left corner

-> from the drop-down menu, select "view account"

-> enter your password

-> under "iTunes in the Cloud", click on the blue "Manage Devices >"

-> remove any old devices

Step#2:

a)Make sure your device has USB connected to the device but not to the computer

b)Turn device off

c)Do the two steps ON THE SAME TIME: 1) hold home button down (don't release) 2) plug the cable to the computer

d)When you see the cable and itunes icons on your device, release you hand from the Home button

e) in iTunes application, click on restore and follow the wizard

i cant see manage devices?

first go to account under the drop down next to your name. THEN enter the passcode, then go to "view account". Click on this and you will see Devices on the left and "mange devices" on the right side of the screen. Holding down "home" while plugging the device into the computer worked for a restore, whereas the advice to hold down "off" while holding down the "home" button simply made my device screen totally black and it would not turn on for several minutes afterwards.

Thank you! After getting nowhere, I followed your steps and am now in recovery mode doing an update. You da bomb.

I also tried all suggestions provided by Apple and kept getting the same results:

"ITunes could not connect to the ipod touch because it is locked with a passcode. You must put the passcode on the ipod before it can be used with itunes"

After multiple tries this is what worked for me:

1) Completely turned off ipod while connected to iTunes.

2) Held home button down AND USB plug at EXACTLY the same time until the USB cable and iTunes picture appears on the ipod.

3) iTunes showed the restore option

4) Performed full restore

It took me like 5 tries to get this thing working. Hope this helps.

Leaving the ipod attached and then re-entering DFU mode worked. The restore extracted and installed - timeout was the issue.

in response to rhmcolvin

I have a much easier possible solution!!

I had this same issue, trying to connect my new iPhone 5s to my Windows computer's iTunes. I was getting two different error messages:

- iTunes could not connect to the iphone because it is locked with a passcode

- iTunes could not connect to the iphone because the device timed out

I found this thread, but did not like the idea of having to restore my iPhone and losing all my settings/data on the phone. After trying several different things, I discovered that I had 5 devices listed under my "Devices" that were authorized, so the real issue was that I had reached my limit. I had several issues with my old iPhone 5s, and had to have it replaced twice. As a result, I had several old iPhones listed under devices that I no longer had. Erasing those solved the problem, and my new phone connected just fine to iTunes. To get rid of the old devices, you can:

Open iTunes

-> click on "store" in the upper left corner

-> from the drop-down menu, select "view account"

-> enter your password

-> under "iTunes in the Cloud", click on the blue "Manage Devices >"

-> remove any old devices

This solved my problem. Hope it helps others as well!

Your current computer may need to be updated to the latest version for your devices to sync

What exactly have you done? Try this:

  1. enter passcode before connecting
  2. try another computer
  3. try to use Syncios to DFU/Recovery restore; control; manage the device
