What is Battery Thermal Diode 0 in AST results?

Having trouble charging/seeing a battery and not sure if the logic board is bad or the battery.

The laptop won't boot of the battery, but will off the ac charger. Once it's booted, you can run it off the battery alone.

AST MRI says there is a problem with the battery (to replace it, even though it's a new battery) but also one of the sensors isn't reading.

It's called the battery thermal diode 0 (zero): n/a.

Is this on the battery or on the logic board and would a bad battery cause a false negative?

Is the new battery an Apple branded battery or is it a third party battery?

The battery thermal diode test gets its reading from the battery itself. Third party batteries will almost always fail this test as they either don't have the proper firmware or sensor in place to return a reading.

The booting issue you describe is also a common issue with third party batteries. I've refurbished upwards of 500 MacBooks and for a long time my employer insisted on using their own third party batteries when we'd run across a failed/consumed Apple battery. A good number of them would behave normally (aside from the battery thermal diode test) but there were still lots that would show the exact symptom you describe, only running off the battery after it was booted with the charger attached.

Hope that helps!
