Replacing head of magsafe charger?

I have a Macbook magsafe charger that will power the computer -- but not charge the battery. Upon close inspection, I discovered that one of the gold colored pin contacts inside the end of the charger has lost its spring and rests below the level of the other pins. I can make the pin come back out by tapping the end of the charger while holding it upside down, but the spring is dead -- when I push the pin back in, it doesn't spring back up like the rest of them.

Has anyone had any luck replacing or repairing the ends of these chargers?

Thanks!

If you mean replacing instead of repairing then that's impossible- Apple doesn't license it's proprietary MagSafe to anyone else, so the only way you can get parts is by buying a whole new charger from them. Which kind of defeats the purpose.

I suggest you follow BigO's advice and try the genius bar.

You can get 3rd party MagSafe AC adapters on eBay in the $30 range...I buy these all the time. They may not be authorized by Apple, but they work great, and they save you from Apple's insane prices.

Thanks for the info -- and yes, that's a drag! I was hoping to just replace that end bit -- seems like such a waste not to be able to!

You can get just the part. I did. And I intend to do it again. Sometime people ruin the power brick so resellers sell what still works.

I've seen this before, but haven't tried fixing it myself yet. One person I know used to always swing his around in a circle before plugging it in to get it to pop out. You also can probably get it out with a small magnet just before you plug in.

But you might not have to worry about that. Apple has had so many issues with the magsafe adapters that you might be able to get it replaced for free. If you are out of warranty you'd have to sweet talk someone at the genius bar but you might get lucky.

I'm at the starting process of repairing my MagSafe adapter. I've seen all sorts of videos on YouTube for opening the power brick and I've found one that doesn't involve a Dremmel or other more destructive method, I know I just tried it!! Opening the MagSafe Power Brick

I plan to do a step by step once I receive my MagSafe replacement lead from eBay. I'll post my efforts on here so others will hopefully benefit...
