Is there an instruction manual here which describes how I can remove the internal drive, then flash the firmware using the propietary windows based software via a USB-SATA cable connected to Windows?

This thing costs twice what a similar windows unit would. I'd sell it and buy two of the Windows versions. To answer your question, NO there is not a manual for doing this.
