hard drive compatibility

will a 5th-gen hard drive work in a 6th gen or vice versa?

seeing as they are the same connector I wondered.

same question for the lcd, could you switch out the ribbon cables and interchange them?

the headphone jacks are universal for the fifth and sixth gens, I know that.

For the "thin" version (80 GB, 120 GB, or new 160 GB), they should be interchangeable. There is a slight RPM difference, but it should still work. I do not have them available, or else I would test it to know for sure.

The LCD has a different width ribbon cable, but you mentioned switching out the ribbon cables. I've never tried this, so I'm not sure if you can pull it off...can't say one way or the other on that one.

Additionally, you can swap front cases between the two, and of course the button is interchangeable. I haven't tried the click wheel yet. These iPods are very touchy with the click wheel. If the cable is slightly off, the iPod will not start.

I hope this gets you started!

Old question I know, but I thought I'd post since this was one of the top results I got when I searched for 5th and 6th gen hard drive compatibility. I just installed a 6th gen 120GB in a 5th gen and it works just fine. Figured I would confirm it for anyone else that was wondering. The 120GB HDD makes a good replacement for the 80GB hard drive since replacement 80GB drives are hard to come by while the 120GB is common.
