Mid 2011 iMac processor upgrades-- capped or better yet to come?

I have a mid 2011 27" iMac with the base processor (2.7ghz i5). I currently have no complaints with the processing capacity, but, the world will march on and one day I will.

So, my question:

I know, with some effort, I can upgrade the processor to the high spec version. Here's my question: Is that the best processor I'll ever be able to put into it? As in, one day can I put in the i7 they use in the new iMacs instead, as Apple adds drivers for them? Or, because mine is sandy bridge and they don't be making any more sandybridge computers, that's the highest spec that will ever work with Apple's drivers?

If it's already the best I'll ever be able to run it in it, I'll upgrade sooner than later... but, if not, I currently have no complaints, so will likely wait a bit.

Thanks!

Sorry to say my crystal ball is a little cloudy today ;-}

No one can say what Intel or Apple are working on in their secret labs. With that said, Moore's law has been proven pretty consistent over the years.

So we can expect more powerful CPU's in the pipeline at Intel and others. Apple is sure to grab these more powerful chips for their newest systems.

Will your current system be upgradable to these newer chips? Up to a point. Intel tends to reuse sockets & interface chips for a few years but they can only do this for so long before they hit the limits of these parts, then a new socket and interface chips will be needed.

Just like the rest of us we'll all need to wait to find out! There has been some news on Intels' new chips and Apple has a developer conference coming up. Between the two we'll hear some clues on whats coming next.

Hang in there ;-}

Awesome, I didn't know if the move to ivy bridge meant the door was closed for faster chips.

SInce I currently have no speed issues, I'll wait for the last design that fits this socket and is supported by Apple :)
