Can I swap "storage" memory from one iPhone 5 to another

I have an iPhone 5 with 32 gig. I never used iCloud so it is not backed up. I have many many pictures on it. While overseas the screen quit recognizing my touch and will not respond. The screen looks fine, the physical buttons work, but I cannot unlock it. Since I was overseas I had data services OFF, and Location services off, etc....

Now I cannot access my iPhone and although I have a service contract and insurance Apple will not fix it. They want me to just take a replacement phone. But I would like to keep my pictures... I KNOW they are still there and okay.

My question is... is this phone like a computer where I can take out the memory with the pictures and when I get my new phone just take them apart and swap out the 32 gig memories and retain my pictures?

exact same problem smashed screen to peices but all the insides are there i just want to take the memory out and put it in another one, been searchings for hours no luck. no one knows

Yes, we know the answer, it's NO! You can't take the memory chips out as they are soldered and the data on them is encrypted.

The best way to recover your stuff is to try connecting to a PC which has iTunes. If you can see within iTunes your data you can sync it to the PC. You may need to buy a new screen if you haven't linked to this PC with your iPhone. The other option here is if you have iCloud your stuff is already backed up to the iCloud server, now you'll need to a second iPhone or iPad or a PC to then access the iCloud account.

btw, if you are a professional data recovery person than its easy to recovery your data from iphone storage chips friendooo ... ;)

Have you even tried connecting it to a PC or Mac to see if you could sync it with-in iTunes? If it still has life thats the only other way here to salvage your stuff.

The idea of swapping the innards between the phones most likely won't work if you are unable to access the iPhone via iTunes. As the logic on the logic board is likely damaged Vs the display its' self.

I hope to try the replacement of the new onto the old phone (after watching many fix it videos)... and hope I don't ruin both phones. :() I tried using iCloud (I had set it up before she went overseas so I could track my sister as long as her location services were on) but AT&T had her turn location services off. It says her phone is offline. (if only she'd let me backup ... but even then she would not have her pictures from overseas)

When I connect to itunes it asks me to enter the Passcode (at the iPhone). IF ONLY it would let me enter the passcode for the iphone at my computer in itunes.

And the whole time the iphone screen has a great picture on it and it says Slide to Unlock ---> .... or sometimes when I reboot the iphone it will come up to the Passcode Screen for a few.... but regardless it ignores our fingers. :(

I've replaced a few netbook screens easily but this tiny iPhone is something else. Thanks!

Replacing the display for iPhone 5 is easier than other phones. Just don't pull too hard or you may damage cables. Also the cable bracket is a little tricky to clip on and apply screws, especially with your other hand holding a screwdriver

Your only way is to try to repair the touch control and get access. This can be as easy as get a temporary replacement screen to get touch to diagnose and replace logic board components.

Swapping memory chip is very difficult but possible. but it is meaningful only if you intend to replace the chip. You CANNOT dump photos from an iPhone 5 flash memory chip because it is encrypted with per device key in the CPU and random keys generated on OS install.

Also, if I got a repair shop to replace the motherboard as well as the screen (my phone was broken pretty badly) would that allow me to get the information or would replacing the motherboard cause me to lose it?

Robin, as I said it is impossible to extract any data from the memory chip. However if you keep the old logic board and repair the board, you can still load data from it.

Stephanie, sorry to tell you that this is not possible. The memory is a hardwired part on the logic board and as such can not be replaced. Hope this helps, good luck.

What about taking a new iPhone 5 and removing the front from the back and then putting the new front onto the old iPhone? or is there programming in the front of the new phone that would ignore the old phone? (I am actually working on this for my sister) I just can't believe that she has to lose her pictures. I am used to computers not Apple phones. She has a passcode on her existing phone.... which will not slide to unlock because it ignores her fingers. She was told it was the digitizer. I wondered if I took another iPhone front off and put it on the front of hers if she could then access her old iphone, backup, etc...

I am really amazed at how difficult this is. The problem is she doesn't use computers but she used her iPhone a LOT and just kept her pictures on the phone and never saved to icloud or any other computer.

If it is just her touch screen not working, the replacement, even temporary, should get her to copy the files of her phone.
