From Cold Start, car has trouble holding idle until warm. Why?

After sitting overnight or a few days my 1999 Camry le 4 cylinder Automatic has trouble holding an idle. I have to hold the gas down for a while until the car warms up and then its fine. Is that the fix itself, is it worth fixing, what is causing this problem.

Not sure if related. Sometimes while stopped in traffic or at a red light, my speedometer will go crazy, hops up to 65mph when I'm completely stopped then dives all the way down to 0. Then when I do need to go its like something is wrong with the engine, kind of putters and doesn't have much power. Once I get moving its fine.

One time this happened on the freeway in traffic and as I stepped on the gas the car stalled and I had to restart it, it was fine after the restart but I was on the freaking freeway that could have been bad.

This only happens when I'm idling.

I had the same issue with the idle air control valve. I talked to one of the guys at O'Reily's who told me it's pretty typical for some older cars as it just gets gunked up after years of use. The quick, temporary, fix is to take off the air filter and hoses attached to the throttle body and spray some carburetor cleaner into the idle air control valve. I found a video on youtube which walked me through it, but it's honestly a really quick and easy fix.

So far as the rough idle goes, (I cant say about the speedo) I'm going to hazard a guess you have a problem with the Idle Air Control Valve or some call it Idle Air Motor. It's generally located on the throttle body and in the case of my 2000 Dodge Ram 5.9l gas engine, it's pretty easy to change and was fairly inexpensive. When I was searching for this on my Dodge, most said it was a good chance that it could just be removed and cleaned and replaced. At least in my case, that did not fix the problem. I had to purchase a new one.

Search Google for "1999 Camry le Idle Air Control Valve" and see if others descriptions of their problems don't sound like yours.

I have the same problem as yours. Did you solve this problem? Did you have more than usual smoke coming out of tailpipe that smells stronger when this happened to your car? How did you fix your car? The mechanic cleaned the throttle body and checked the oil and he said its good. Was there a pump or component that's bad? I don't have any check engine light on. This happened after another mechanic changed the serpentine belt because its slipping.

To me it sounds like a vacuum leak, probably the intake manifold gasket. Try spraying brake cleaner around the intake & notice the idle. What happens when the car warms up the gaskets seat much better sealing off the vacuum leak. The idle control valve is a possibility, but I would get a can of brake cleaner which is cheap , spray away and notice the idle.

Sorry, took me long to reply back what the fix with my car was. It was a bad gas.........for some reason the gas station has mixed with diesel and unleaded. They refunded my gas and the fix to rain my gas tank.

I've had check engine light on for about 1yr. car was running good until I got a tune up now it surges but when I put the gas pedal all the way down it stops could it b the erg valve I'm a woman. Not mechanical inclined

I have a 1996 dodge ram 1500 5.9 and it idles rough and sputters out. When I unplug the map and tps sensors it runs great. I plug map and tps back in and turn her over and holdmy hazzards on it idles perfectly and I can drive it anyone know what it could be? I think it might be a electrical.

I have a similar problem with my Toyota duet ej 3 piston, wen it stay over night to idle it is a problem and wen I press the accelerator pedal to help idle it goes off, what can I do to solve it?
