More memory, more time to boot?

My iMac (27", 2.93GHz) had 4GB (2x2GB) from the beginning. Recently i purchased an extra 16GB (2x8GB) module. I took off the 4GB, placed the 16GB and i noticed that boot time takes longer. The chime was heard a 4.8sec and now with the more memory placed its heard at 7.9sec. Users window at boot used to appear at 25.8sec now its appearing at 37.1sec.

Is it normal for boot time to take longer when one places more memory?

Is there some app that i can check with, the speed of my imac?

It could be something like boot cache optimisation preloading more files for caching.

On Mountain Lion you can use hardware diagnostics which can be started by holding D before the Apple logo starts showing during boot time.

Is that boot cache thing happening until the chime sound is heard or before the users login screen appears?

Bummer. Boot cache is done after chime kicks in. Sorry, I didn't paid attention to your original question.

Not really sure about boot delay before chime. It almost seems like the delay for searching bootable partition. If you didn't changed or add partitions, then it's probably some additional memory check on EFI boot. But then, I'm not sure about that.

How can one reset the BootCache?

How can i update the EFI to the latest version?

I would recommend that you download the app called MacTracker from your App Store. I had a similar issues with my Macbook Pro 13" Mid-2010.

Depending on the year, model, and OS that you have it may only be able to support 8GB of ram.

With that App it should tell you what your specific computer can handle, I know for me when I tried doing 16GB in my Macbook it did misbehave but finding out that my model is only compatible with 16GB if I make the upgrade to Mountain Lion (which I did).

Hope this helps!

Andrei.

Where was it written (was it in MacTracker?) that your MBPro needed to make an upgrade to Mountain Lion in order to be compatible with 16GB?
