Can my 500GB LaCie external drive be repaired?
This drive suddenly went south, making clicking, clacking noises, and failing to mount.
Is it repairable, or headed for the recycle bin?

Sounds like a goner to me. When a drive makes noises like that usually they can't be saved. If at all possible and you can mount it I would be prepared to copy any data I wanted to save and would plan on buying a new drive for the enclosure. Ralph

Forgot to ask-- check with LaCie to see if you have any kind of warranty left for a free replacement. Ralph

Try putting it in the freezer for a bit, it may work.
Try taking the Hard Drive out and use another enclosure, maybe the enclosure is broken
Note: If/when it works, DO NOT TURN IT OFF, copy as much of your data off right then and there, it may be the last time it'll spin up again.

I know I'm resurrecting a dead thread but for anyone searching it may come in handy.
Usually the only time the freezer trick works is when the drive is making a constant clicking, grinding/squealing sound (I have only head one drive get to the squealing stage. It didn't last long) This sound usually means that you have a bearing that is starting to seize.
Freezing the hard drive causes the bearing and other moving parts to shrink slightly, possibly freeing them up. They will spin freely until the drive heats up, so make sure you get your most important files off first.
If it only clicks when trying a specific operation or when opening a certain file/folder/application, then you probably have what are known as bad blocks. This essentially means some segments of you hard drive's platters are becoming unreadable. This can happen when the power is cut to the computer, or the computer is dropped or shaken. It can also happen for no apparent reason.
As for enclosures being faulty, I have had that happen many times with cheap enclosures. The bridge inside goes and the drives can make clicking noises and sound like they are going to die. Switch them over to a new enclosure, and they're good to go.

Thanks for all your suggestions folks. It is a goner, I'm afraid. I don't understand how putting it in the freezer helps? Nor how the enclosure could be broken? Anyway, I may buy another HD to put in the enclosure, or just take it to the recycler.

Anyone know what happens to broken hard drives…where they go?

I would drill holes in it to make sure no one could pull data off of it. You then would turn it in on a electronics parts day at your local landfill or possibly turn it in to a computer shop for disposal. (That"s what I usually do) Ralph

I'm actually not sure how the freezer would help, but its worked for me a few times. Could be something to do with the lubricant or some parts shrinking due to the cold.
