This topic needs some clarification: there is NO 7th generation iPod classic. Any parts from the 80, 120 and thin 160 gb models are interchangeable. The only issue is with the back plate, as it will show a different capacity. However, the thick 160 GB rear case, battery, hard drive, hard drive cable, hard drive bumper, and headphone jack are not compatible with the thin models. The front plate, all display, click wheel, and logic board related parts, and the metal framework are interchangeable for all models, thick or thin.

Yes, but you have to realize that the HDD will run slower than desired and might lag. It’s like putting top end components of a Ferrari into a Pinto. Possible, yes, worthwhile - maybe not. As you change parts out and interchange other part you may need to secure them using a third party adhesive (use tape, not glue), and other components will need to be upgraded or changed to fit the case too. If you have two ipods it would be better just to buy the needed parts and install. Now if your goal is to have a bit of fun, give it a try and see if it loads up and works. The worst thing that can happen is you either bugger up a part and need to replace it (for a whole 13 bucks), or it just doesn’t work, and you will have learnt something new.

No, it's like putting a 6th generation iPod classic part into a 7th Generation iPod classic.

BOTH 160GB MODELS come with the same Toshiba MK1634GAL drive. I doubt the 120GB models would benchmark much lower.

6th gen ipod classic LCD is not the same as any 7th gen classics LCD. The 7th gen has 2 additional pins so the ribbon is slightly wider.

I have just ordered a replacement screen, for what I thought was my iPod classic 5th Gen. But, it turns out that the screen I ordered is minutely thicker than my original screen (but less than half a mm) ... But it's enough to stop the screws securing the screen in place.

So, I would say that if this is anything to go by, then I should be very careful in what you buy. I'm stumped by my little problem, so I guess this is what's meant by thick and thin parts?!?!? I would be forever grateful if I could read the A**** number on the rear cover, but it's so scratched I can't even see where it was!

Anyone ... thinner screen means what? It's an 80GB iPod classic, but what gen, model A**** etc?

Regards

P

Interesting topic. I have a different question: As mentioned here, it seems iPod Classic 6th Generation, 6.5 and 7th gen have pretty similar hardware, and so, should not be difficult to interchange parts. My question is: Have anyone here installed a Gen 7 Headphone/Hold switch unit to a Gen 6? Would it work? My goal is allowing my good-ol 6th gen to be controlled with Apple's $19 EarPods w/control. Thanks!
