How can I set function keys to default?

After upgrading the SDRAM from 2 to 4GB and the HDD from 500 GB to 2 TB, I installed OS 10.6 from disk. Everything is fine with the exception of the function key mapping.

I booted from the install disk and used Terminal Utility to see what the keys are doing. F1 to F4 do not register in Terminal app.The brightness controls, normally F1 and F2 are now mapped on F14 and F15.

Can you suggest how I can return the keyboard function keys to default? I have tried to do this in System Preferences, but without success.

Three possible ways.

  1. I would use the intendedSystemPreferences->Keyboard:Keyboard Shortcuts tab, Restore Defaults for Display, Services & Universal access.
  2. OR Delete from /Library/Preferences any com.apple.keyboardXXXX .plist file you can find. Log out and log back in.
  3. If neither of these work I would try a keyremapper .app and assign the keys through that.

Tks Machead3,. I tried #1 and 2. Factory deaults don't seem to include the media keys which is what I'm looking for, eg. F7 - Previous track on iTunes, etc.

No sign of com.apple.keyboardxxxx.plist in Preference folder.

Do you know if keyremapper app will provide for audio control functions?

Check iTunes preferences if it's not spec'd there... you can set all sorts of custom key actions from the System Preference Keyboard. Click Applications on the left... at the bottom of the large window on the right you'll see a +- to add new apps & keys.
