Can I upgrade from a 80gb to a larger hard drive?

The hard drive on my Ipod 5th Generation late 2006 80gb seems to have quit. I'm thinking of trying to replace it, and was wondering if it is possible to install a larger drive and would it be advisable?

Hello!

The 5th Generation iPod is particularly finicky and troublesome to diagnose. I would definitely advise looking over the iPod 5th Generation troubleshooting page first.

Having that said, I have seen up to 100 GB hard drives for the iPod 5th Generation (check Google for an example). These specialty hard drives are quite expensive! It's a toss-up of whether or not it is more cost-effective to purchase a new iPod.

HOWEVER, you don't want to just add your iPod to a landfill!!! If just the hard drive is broken, consider replacing it with a discount 60 or 80 GB hard drive and making it a Christmas gift?

Good luck!

Thanks much, I just read through troubleshooting page (big help), and think it might be the hard drive, as it permanently freezes on the apple logo. you can also hear a clicking sound from HD. Does this sound right?

Yes, the clicking sound is definitely a giveaway. Good call!

While Technically possible, the Low demand for these types of drives yield high costs and low availability, generally making it not cost effective to do so.
