Are you checking hold switch and doing steps below

1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

2. Now press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, which may take about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step''.

yes I've tryed that multiple times, still doesnt work, like when i reset it and installed the new software it brought up the page where it asked you what language you would like and i cant click anything cause of the clicking wheel is frozen or something the only way i can listen to music is by shaking the iPod. nothing else seems to work

it's a pretty common nano 4g problem - but they are only similar and there is no common answer to that.

some can be fixed with scotch tape on the click wheel, others work when the click wheel is replaced (but not all), then a few work if the click wheel connector is cleaned and so on.

i have one of those frozen nano 4g that won't work with the "common tricks" - maybe i order a replacement part and try that.

the "fun" part is, that the touch sensitivity is still there - if the iPod "sleeps" and you slightly toch it - the light goes on

I think this is the best way before taken it to Apple store or centre.

thats what brem suggested - that's working on the nano 4g - that is the only thing what always works - the rest of the click wheel is still unresponsive. and many nano 4g are out of warranty - so apple won't fix anything on them - except selling you a newly refurbished one for the price of a nano 5g

For example, if you try this step on OS X maybe try again the step above from windows

lol - what OS?? are you aware that the steps you are referring to are done without a computer?? and btw - i restored the nano 4g on 7 and 10.6.2 - worked without an error message on both systems. please don't copy and paste the same stuff twice as an answer - especially when someone already postet it 2 weeks earlier!

I have that problem with the 4g nano. I have replaced the click wheel but it does not working. I have test the click wheels (both of them new and old) on an other 4g nano and they are working. I can do hard reset with the click wheel. And I can open ipod up when press the buttons. But it cannot respond after the ipod turned up. I can not login the diag. menu!!

Sorry for my english.

Regards.

The wheel on my Nano doesn't work. I've tried re-booting it and unlocking it.

How much is apple going to charge me?

It would be a lot easier for you to ask your own question if you expect some assistance with the problem. Nobody sees your question since it is tagged as an answer to a 10 month old question.

FFFFF. I don't have an answer, just another question. I'm not sure if this the problem you all have been talking about, but my iPod, fourth generation, out of warranty(duh), refuses to work. The screen is frozen, but the music will play, it still responds to touch, I can put in/take off music, which means it also appears in itunes. I've restored the stupid thing, reset it manually (and after all that, it will NOT respond to being turned "off"). The screen mainly stays on the Apple Logo (because I've been resetting it), but once in a while, it will change to what the actual ipod is on (like I said, it still responds to touch), but when I try to do anything, it's frozen again (but I can still use the music, provided I can even navigate thing blind). Once in blue moon, it actually WILL work, the screen, I mean, but that usually lasts 5 seconds before it freezes again. The HECK is going on here? And what should I do about it?

Your best choice would be to sell the 4g and get a mp4 player from archos or samsung or sony . They are a lot cheaper and you can do a lot more with them
