Water Damaged, Logic Board Repair - EMI Shield Removal?

I have an iPhone 5 that was dropped in the toilet. I disassembled it, scrubbed it with a toothbrush + isopropyl alcohol (91%). I have also replaced the battery, and tested a known working battery. I have since reassembled and it is in a boot loop on the initial apple icon logo.

I have reason to believe that the logic board has water damaged parts under the EMI shield.

My Question is what is the best way to remove the EMI shielding? Solder Gun, Heat Gun etc? or if I am best just leaving the motherboard in the isopropyl for a day and crossing my fingers that it breaks down the corrosion enough that I can just use a can of air to get it out.

prestonpbarker, if you suspect corrosion underneath the EMI shields, you will have to remove the shields. Soaking it in alcohol will not do anything by itself. Remove the shields, yes, use a heat gun with a small nozzle (or even better a hot air rework station) if you have experience with that. Be careful not to heat and/ or melt other components. Once you remove the shields, use sterile water and a soft brush to clean your board. You may have to do it a couple of times. Then you use 90% plus isopropyl alcohol to clean the board of the water.

Search YouTube & iFixit. Take the time to educate yourself first. Most are willing to help, but that is a critical task that can not be quickly instructed in a few sentences. But it is possible with the right knowledge & equipment. Even when done by a professional micro-soldier, they are generally not replaced- depending on what advice you follow. Technically, they are there for a reason. And even when done correctly, they are difficult for a skilled individual. The most successful chance you have would be to send to iFixit or iPad Rehab for both services (removal & replacement). The individual who stated using a Spurger is misinformed. The EMI shield is soldered on, therefore it must be soldered or heated with hot air at the correct temperature to be removed. When I say correct temp., I mean with in normal limits for small board repair. Such temperature is to avoid not damaging the components at all or further. If you do not own the equipment, be careful what you chose. You need to weigh out whether you need data recovery or device resurrection. I believe the answer to that question can be found by my first suggestion.

Try soaking it in alcohol for a day and see if it helps. If that fails, then you should go ahead and take them off using soldering. However, this is very difficult and the alcohol should work.

I will go ahead and try that. Would I not be able to use a heat gun which might be easier than solder gun?

You can't. You're supposed to remove the EMI shields with a plastic spudger. But be very careful, as you can easily damage parts beneath the shield if you're not very careful.

What do you mean you cant? I've removed these with soldering irons and heat guns without issue.

Plus nice job necro'ing an old thread.

I have purchased a iphone 6 motherboard from ebay with the shield off which is meant to cover the A8 processor. what can i use to stick the shield back on.

A soldiering iron (40 watt) will work to soldier EMI shield (if soldier station is not avail.). First, make your round around the board with magnifying unit to be sure there's no stray soldier from removal of shield and you don't see any balling of soldier near chips where components got a bit too hot. If you run a bit a tinning flux through with a bit of heat it can help fix issues before using ultrasound or soldiering shield. All available info on YouTube/iFixit. Other than those issues, you may be able to use iron w/flux to reattach shield without adding soldier. If shield was removed properly, there should still be soldier where shield attaches. When out of town once, I used 40 watt iron, flux, soldier to remove and reattach. Watch your heat.

I have never in my life heard of using a plastic spluger too to remove a soldiered component the best aproach is to remove the coaxial from the bottom place in a jig or small delicat vice not restricting the clamps of the emi shield on the mother board gets some flux liquid rosin poweder what ever you know know to use I use powder it don't matter the power melts and allows the compenents to stick in th position with out moving until the heat / tinning process takes place also allows the compents to remain in place til the shields can be carefully removed with forceps.. . thats how a backwoods mississippi redneck with no education works on iphone motherboards and components. Heat gun taper nossle made from a trumped bell from brass better than most solering station retains heat in the brass giving you much more stable air temperature control with out blowing components everwhere.

Kerrie Jager probably means that some EMI shields are in fact removable on some iPhones and do indeed click off with a spudger or similar tool.

I know its three years late and you're probably using an iPhone 7 by now but change the battery (its often the cause of boot loop) and yes, remove the emi shield if your comfortable with it.
