Here's the EveryMac specs for your system: Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 20-Inch (Al) Specs

As you can see the system comes with 1GB of RAM (using one 1GB module). In your case your system has two 1GB modules for 2GB total RAM. Your system only has 2 memory slots.

Your choices are: To remove both modules and put in two 2GB modules to get to 4GB of RAM (which is what you asked). Or, you could also go up to 6GB by using one 2GB and one 4GB modules. Which is the systems limit

In any case I would recommend upgrading your EFI to the latest version for your system. Follow this Apple TN on how to do it: EFI & SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.
