Can a Combodrive cause MacBook to crash?

I don't know whether it is a hard- or software failure. Everytime I move the mouse arrow over the icon of an audio CD, it freezes immediately and there's no way of doing anything with the computer except booting it anew.

With a DVD it's even more drastic. Its icon nor that of the DVD player appear but instead the mouse arrow freezes very shortly after the DVD is inserted into the combodrive.

Just am at a loss what to suspect. Thanks.

I repaired a iBook G4 that could not boot because of a faulty optical drive cable. You problem could be related to the combo drive, the ribbon cable or the logic board optical drive socket. To troubleshoot the issue you'd need parts to swap. First if you could boot from another source and try the combo drive you would know if the problem is software related. If the issue persists then I'd check the ribbon cable and the combo drive.

I'd wish all things in life could that easy: In a last attempt I unscrewed my MacBook for I don't know how many times. I disconnected the combodrive cable and plugged it back in again, using a little more force than usual. That was the cause of the problem: The thing was not sitting tightly enough in its socket. Now no more crashes, DVD can be watched and Audio CDs listened to. Thank you.

Try running "Software Update" to make sure you have the latest driver. Hook up to another Mac via firewire and start up holding the "T" key down. Now run Disk Utilities from the other Mac.

This is a very unusual problem. I found no similar problems with a web search. I really don't know the fix. Hopefully Disk Utilities will give us a clue. Can you give us the history of the machine?
