Replaced Top Case Keyboard Mouse Don't Work

Hi all,

I have an early 2008 MacBook where the keyboard & mouse don't function but the power button still works. History is unknown; its owner said that it just stopped working one day. Swapped the upper case with a known good one & exactly the same thing happens - nothing from keyboard & mouse and I'm prompted to search for a Bluetooth mouse every time the computer boots. Have tried booting to a Snow Leopard DVD to see if it's the OS but still no luck. External keyboard & mouse work fine, but obviously this isn't ideal for a portable.

I've had a look at the connector for the upper case on the logic board & it looks good - no signs of spills, so I'm leaning towards a logic board but given the age of the unit I'm hoping that it's something else.

Any guesses as to what could be going on here would be very much appreciated.

Cheers.

USB keyboard / mouse works fine. I won't be replacing the board on this machine, but thanks for all of your help anyway!

Good workaround. BTW Please mark my answer accepted - it's the only reward I get for volunteering.

''Are the keyboard and trackpad detected by the system software? ''Go to in Applications->Utilities-> System Profiler (Information/System Report in later OS's) to see if the keyboard is detected, If it is you can figure the keys or their circuitry need repair (replacement it's very hard to repair keyboard circuits).

If the keyboard is not "detected" then it's likely a connector. ribbon cable, or logic board problem. If not detected I would check again after the new keyboard is installed… if its still not detected a close examination of the circuitry with a magnifying glass would be logical.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Keyboard isn't detected but thanks for the answer anyway. Baring in mind that I know the replacement upper case works, am I now looking at a logic board problem?

Thanks.

Yes I would think connector or circuit for the keyboard. Have you tried a USB or Wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard?
