Excessive fan noise after hard drive replacement

I just replaced the hard drive in my Mac (Late 2006 2.13 GHz). It has been years since I've had it up and running, but the fan seems like it's unusually loud. I've reset the SMC and PRAM and this hasn't resolved the issue.

The fan is running at about 60-65 decibels according to an app I have.

I figure my next step is to open things back up and take a look inside.

What things should I look in to while I'm inside? I plan to check the positioning of the hard drive and the state of the fan. I'm likely going to replace the PRAM battery as well. Is there anything else that I should look out for?

Also, could it be related to the fact that I used a 3TB hard drive when the default was 250GB?

You do need to be careful in replacing HD's as the SATA I/O speed can mess you up.

You see your new HD is likely a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive while your old HD was a SATA I (1.5 Gb/s). The size of the drive is not the issue here only the I/O speed.

What is likely happening here is the indexer task is having a hard time indexing your files as it is encountering read & write errors so it must do a lot of retries to get the task done (over working) so this causes the CPU & the HD to overheat and then the fan need to kick in to high speed to try to cool things down. Basically this is not healthy for your system to run this hard for too long.

You could also see this using a Fan & Temp monitoring program like Temperature Gauge Pro which I find as one of the better ones out there (there are others).

OK how do you fix this?

At this point you will need to see if the hard drive you bought has a jumper to place it in compatibility mode. Can you supply us the drive info make & model so we can see what you have? I must warn you you may need to return the HD and get a different model if you can't alter its setting.

I would also recommend upgrading your EFI firmware. Follow this Apple TN on how to check and get the needed upgrade EFI & SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.

Unfortunately the EFI is currently up to date.

The HD is Model #: WD30EARX Speed: Intellipower Western Digital.

Correction: Disk Utility actually reports it as WD30EZRX.

WD Green ( WD30EZRX) and WD Green drives drive specs

Sorry to say this drive does not have a jumper to slow it down. You'll need to get a different drive.

I should be able to find out if the drive has a jumper by its spec sheet, is this correct?
