What Adhesive or Glue is used to adhere Glass to Frame?

Hello fellow Fixers!

This question has been on my mind for years now I have yet to find an answer so I have come here to gather like minded people to find a solution.

What I am running into is screens coming loose from the frame of the screen its self (not the frame or casing of the iPhone).

A lot of my parts have been coming back from costumers with the screen coming up or loose. Mainly on iPhone 5S, 5C, and 5. But sometimes even on 4S and 4.

I am wanting to find some type of adhesive that is redly available on amazon or ebay or even local stores such as walmart or lowes.

Basically I need something that is exactly what Apple uses which I know is probably a protected patent but there should be something close out there. Something that is in a Gel form so it is easily controllable and only goes where you want it to go. Bonds quickly at around 15 seconds. But then once it dries is flexible like silicone.

I have been using Loctites Gel Control super glue which is great as far as control and bonding quickly, but it can damage the iPhone. I have seen it to where the glue will crack and it either becomes un-bonded again, or the glass gives before the glue and cracks the glass, or pulls the paint off underneath.

This needs to be solved not only for screens coming back defective so that we can provide a proper adhesive, but would also be great to find for those shops doing a "Glass only" replacement and needs to re-adhere the frame to the Glass, Digitizer, LCD assembly after curing the UV Glue.

Okay okay, I'm probably rambling at this point but you get the idea. Any feedback would be great.

What glue or adhesive have you been using ? Are you still using the loctites gel control super glue?

Old question, but the answers aren't clear so I'll pass on what I've been told from those who have been to the factories:

OEM (original Apple) LCDs use a cold press for adhering the frames to the glass. The glue they use they refer to CPA or CPG for Cold Press Glue/Adhesive, however that's not a brand or type as it's just a basic description. They apparently use a custom adhesive specifically made for them.

At any rate, while CPA sets very strong it takes a long time clamped under pressure to set, something in the order of hours. So most 3rd party suppliers use hot glue (yes, hot glue), aka HMG or Hot Melt Glue. HMG sets very fast and comes in a variety of grades with a variety of strengths. The biggest issue is that it doesn't bond well to glass. so you need a good finish on the 'paint' that's on the glass to allow the HMG to grab it while it grabs the glass.

This relates to another issue that you may have noticed - most iPhone 6 replacement LCDs recently have been plagued by 2 issues: Thicker frames, thus causing glass protrusion, and frame separation. This is due to the fact that the iPhone 6 has very very little space for adhesive and the HMG that 3rd party suppliers have been using is too weak. They increased the frame size as a way to try to compensate for this issue and increase bonding (I don't know how a thicker frame helps, but anyway...) but that didn't work. Most have since changed to a stronger HMG to try to fix this issue.

Superglue (aka cyanoacrylate or CA) aren't recommended for glass. Per Henkel, "When using CA to bond glass, the strength is initially strong but degrades dramatically over time." It serves a purpose for some in temporarily holding iPod Touch/iPad digitizers down while the proper adhesive grabs (though this is bad practice as CA vapor can mess up LCDs and will mark any oil on the glass) but it shouldn't be used to hold frames to glass.

Well I just did it ... too late now.. just very very little amounts at the top, but it's an OLD 5S and if it screws it up and doesn't hold I'll have an excuse to upgrade.. I only don't upgrade because of certain reasons .. ( jb ) .. right now I have my glass tacked around the edges and clamped down with .. of all things.. a chip clip .. gives just enough pressure to let it set... I doubt it will last, and I didn't consider the vapors... but oh well, I'll buy something new if all else fails..

hello, what you need is B7000 glue (just google it) It is used for bonding LCD with frame. Also if you would like you could use thermal activated sticker. It is a precuted sticker for frame but you need to warm up the frame to 90C and them apply sticker.

Reasons:

1. Glue

Generally, iPhone 6 LCD assemblies and frames are held together by PUR glue, which has two types HMG (Hot Melt Glue) and CPG (Cold Press Glue). OEM factories use CPG to assemble the screen and frame, which requires 15 seconds cooling time, 2-3 hours protecting time (Protecting time: time to keep the mold to hold the glued parts). It needs higher cost, longer working time and better equipment to produce and handle. While the assembled flex or refurbished iPhone 6 screen replacements are glued with HMG which the cooling time is 10 seconds and the protecting time is only around 6 seconds. It costs less, doesn’t require a strict working environment, has a shorter working time and results in weaker stickiness.HMG quality also varies by Low, Middle and High grades due to the different prices. Most third-party manufacturers use mid-grade glue for Apple products, however, it is not sticky enough to meet the higher requirements as the iPhone 6’s frame is thinner and the screen is bigger than previous models.

2. Frame

For assembled flex and refurbished iPhone screen assemblies with frames, both the frame and the front glass are high copies, and the frame is custom-made according to the size of the original front glass. After the molds of these two parts have been made, third party factories will constantly use them which means once the frame separation problems had occurred, many of the parts have already been sold in the market previously and currently.

The sizes of the iPhone 4/4S, 5/5C/5S and 6 frames are as follows.

We can see that the edge of the iPhone’s frame has been getting progressively thinner and thinner, thus the bonding area of the screen and frame is getting smaller. As we mentioned before not only is the problem with the mid-grade glue, but also with the machinery as well as the process that is used for previous iPhone models are not applicable any longer.

As you can see, there’re black areas on the bottom of 5/5C/5S and 6 frames. OEM factories will apply adhesive on that area, while many third-party factories won’t apply any adhesive to those areas in order to cut costs, which results in the glass separating from the frame.

The quality of high copy frames and front glass are not as good as OEM ones, the surface areas of these two high copy parts may not be smooth enough to ensure sufficient contact for the adhesive. This is also a reason why the frame tends to fall off.

※ Extended Research: Why the assembled flex frames have a higher refurbish rate than the OEM ones?

The high copy frames used in assembled flex parts are not as strong as the OEM counterparts, and third-party factories have lengthened the height of the frame in order to increase the bonding area. The height of OEM iPhone 6 frames is 0.89 mm VS 1.18 mm for the high copy iPhone 6 frame.

3. Glass

The assembly work put into iPhone 6 screens and frames should be done in a dust-free room, but many third-party manufacturers are unable to meet this standard. Dust easily sticks to the glass unless these conditions are met, which will affect the quality of the glue.

Besides, there’s a varnish on the bottom of the iPhone 6 glass, if it is not sticky enough and coming off, the frame is guaranteed to come off as well.

Solutions:

▪ Use high grade HMG to assemble iPhone 6 LCD assemblies and frames

I dont get the difference between super glue, loctite gel glue and high grade HMG. Why is high grade HMG the best solution for gluing glass to frame?

B7000 glue is the best glue you can use and very easy to buy either from ebay or amazon

Hi, I am also facing the same Problem for iPhone 6 PLUS. Should we heat the frame to use this Glue ? If you an shortly explain the procedure, it will ber very helpful. Thanks a lot.

I just put a thin bead around the outside edge and some squiggles at the top and bottom where the flange is wider. No heat (unless you want it to dry faster). Be careful if you need to glue the receiver mesh to the glass. Just a tiny bit too much glue and it soaks through the whole mesh keeping the sound inside the phone.

I use this for iPads etc. But can be messy. And hard to run down thin side of iPhone 5 screen frame.etc. The glue will come out the sides. I would like to get this sorted as I have a lots of screen's to refurb etc.

I encountered the same problem while replacing my battery, the plastic bezel separated from the screen. I used Gorilla glue which is seems like cyanoacrylate super glue in gel form. First I disconnected the screen to make it easier, then glued very carefully. Seems like it worked great but a previous poster mentioned that super glue will degrade over time so we will see.

PARLITE Glass Glue Adhesives is the best answer for this according to my opinion. This is most reliable adhesive available in market and utilized by the many of industries regularly. They are also providing good range for the cross bonding also.

How can a UV glue be used at each end of the glass cover when there is paint on the back of the glass? In my case, black paint of some kind.

I am a engineer at Ralakde , we at Ralakde use Guerrilla Glue to stick the bezel or screen to the housing. I usually use this glue with most of the Sony because it gives good hold and easier to take it off later. I hope this helps. Thank you

Which glue is best to use so that the phone screen can be restuck down and not break down and cause the screen to come loose again in high temperatures? It is summer and my Sony Xperia screen is unsticking... Again because of increased temperatures

We use Red Tape to adhere iPad digitizers the the frames.

Xperias, in our experience, are much more difficult to re-adhere successfully after disassembly. It depends on the exact model of Xperia, but we've had issues with all the ones that have come in. If 1mm - 2mm Red Tape doesn't work you could try a precision application of something stronger like RTV glue. It's messy work with no room for error, so proceed at your own risk.
