DVD Drive not mounting discs

Okay, so a friend of mine gave me one of these machines for free, so I decided to refurbish it.

I'm trying to re-install the operating system, and Apple support was kind enough to send me a copy of 10.5 for free.

I can't seem to get the DVD drive to read the disc. It'll stick around in the drive, and pop out.

Initially, I assumed the DVD drive was bad, however I ordered a new one on eBay and installed it. Still no change.

The operating system reads the DVD drive as a device too. I can't seem to put my finger on what could possibly be wrong.

The first generation of G4 system optical drive was some what limited on what disks it could read.

4X SuperDrive - Apple reports that this 4X DVD-R/CD-RW SuperDrive "writes DVD-R discs at up to 4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to16x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 10x speed, [and] reads CDs at up to 32x speed." It uses an Ultra ATA/100 bus.

That last in the series had a much better optical drive:

6X DL SuperDrive - Apple reports that this "16X" DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW SuperDrive "writes DVD-R discs at 16x speed, writes DVD+R DL discs at up to 6x speed, reads DVDs at up to 16x speed, writes CD-R and CD-RW discs at up to 24x speed, [and] reads CDs at up to 32x speed." It uses an Ultra ATA/100 bus.

So depending on the disk it might not be readable by your system. * The drive info is from EveryMac web site.

If your system is running you could look at the '''System Profiler"" application to find out which drive you have or you can just open it up and checkout the part online for its specs.

Hey Dan!

Thanks for the reply. I can't seem to play audio CDs or my copy of Dirty Dancing on DVD either. The system profiler recognizes the drive as valid also. I'm a little stumped here.

If that is the case you likely have a dirty lens. Try a CD/DVD cleaning disk (has a micro brush) if you're careful, you could also try a short burst of can'ed air (make sure the liquid doesn't squirt out). If that doesn't work then you'll need to replace the drive (or use an external).
