Older Dual Drive (A 1226) Dual Drive, SSD cache + archival storage?

Since my MacBook Pro is a dual drive, can a smaller SSD work with my existing second drive to store the majority of data/files? How would this be different than a SSHD? (hybrid combo) I currently have almost 500 Gigs stored, and SATA 1 technology.

I doubt you can find a 2.5" SATA I SSD. Booting from an optical drive of that vintage box could present some issues. I would opt for an external USB SSD to store data.
