Upgrade CPU & SSD

Hello, I have an iMac 27" late 2012 with mechanical HD and i5 processor.

I would like to upgrade the CPU to a i7 and change out the HD for a SSD.

I would like to know what Intel CPU and if a Samsung 500 SSD is workable in this system.

Thanks Cristian

This system is so new I don't think anyone has tried upgrading the CPU. Review this IFIXIT guide iMac Intel 27" EMC 2546 Logic Board Replacement as you can see the amount of work even to open this system up to do almost everything is quite a lot! If this is your first time working on a computer or even an iMac this is not a DIY for a first timer. In any case you'll end up replacing the entire logic board with the i7 board for this system. I wouldn't try going with a Haswell CPU based board as things are different. You may want to think about selling your system and getting a newer model that meets your needs Vs trying to do this.

As to your second part of your question. Swapping out the HD for a SSD while possible again is a lot of work. But much less than trying to swap out a logic board. The resale of your system will be diminished with the smaller storage. You also will need to deal with the internal HD temp sensor Apple uses in the HD's. If you don't your system fan will go into over drive all of the time needlessly. You'll need this OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac. A better solution here would be to get the Apple M.2 SSD to then create a Fusion drive but this is again a lot of work.
