Computer unresponsive after thermal compound replacement.

Hi there. I just concluded replacing the thermal compound on the unit and now it won't respond at all to the press of the power button. The battery indicator shows 3/4 power, the battery is connected to the motherboard, but no response whatsoever.

I also replaced the hard drive with a new, unformatted hard drive due to the failure of the last. To my knowledge it should be at least giving me a boot and an apple logo.

I followed the iFixit directions to the T, using the extremely helpful Magnetic Project mat and my precision screwdriver set.

Tried unplugging battery cable and holding down power button to completely drain of power. Unsuccessful. It was doing similar things a few weeks back when it was getting really hot and the hard drive failed (Seagate SSHD 500 GB).

Tried the following procedure to reset SMC, and was unsuccessful: On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.

• Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.

• Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Thanks,

Andrew

Have you tried just unplugging the HD to see if the system was able to start then?

Yup. Tried the old HD and no HD. Neither method provides any response from the status light at the front.

Ok. Found the solution: I looked back through the iFixit guide to check on the functions of each of the connectors removed and replaced in the process. Coming across the keyboard ribbon cable, I recalled it was resistant to going all the way in, and though it seemed secure it was a fraction of a millimeter from being fully in in comparision to the image on the iFixit guide (MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Heat Sink Replacement).

I'd hoped this might relate to the power button, so, with the ribbon cable now in farther, and with the hard drive out, I pressed the power button (the first time I was disappointed and then realized the batter power cable wasn't plugged into the Mobo/Lobo). After the cable was back in place, I pressed the power button and the status light started to blink. The unit booted and brought me to a screen with a folder with a question mark (no doubt due to the fact that no hard drive was present).

Thanks, Dan, for your response and helping me to get there. Whereas it didn't provide my solution, it did spur me on to consult the guide more closely. Prior to replacing the HD, I did have several times where the unit was unresponsive, simply because of the failed HD, unless it was a heating issue (the unit did get extremely hot).
