Having trouble with 2nd HDD

OK, so I followed the guide here to swap out my optical drive for a 1TB 7200 RPM disk drive. It is not a hybrid drive. I left the 120 GB drive alone in the HDD bay.

After reassembly, the drive does not show up on my system. I took everything apart again, and started from scratch, even removing the drive from the housing and reinstalling. Still nothing.

I do notice a small lag in boot up (maybe a second or 2 slower than it used to be) and a weird graphic that shows up in the bottom of my screen right before I get to the login screen.

There is lots of info about choosing and installing a hard drive, but not a whole lot on troubleshooting, so any help would be appreciated.

Late 2011 model MacBook Pro 17" 8,3 and Mavericks 10.9.4

Thanks!

I would start by making sure I had the latest EFI firmware installed on the system. Follow this Apple TN: EFI & SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.

Next I would take this drive out of the system and install it into a FireWire or USB case or use a SATA to USB converter cable to test & prep the drive.

If the drive was working at this point and still failed when I installed the drive again I would check the specs of the drive as the SATA I/O speed of this drive maybe too fast for the system via the optical drive I/O port. Review this note OWC has for their carrier: Optical to SATA Drive Converter Bracket Solution.

Here's the note they have:

"Testing has demonstrated that Apple factory hardware does not reliably support a 6G (6Gb/s) Solid State Drive or Hard Disk Drive in the optical bay of 2011 MacBook Pros (ModeI ID8,1; 8,2; 8,3)"

Went through the steps you recommended. Drive works fine in an enclosure. When I re-installed it, the dis utility appeared!...but that was at about 11:00 PM EST last night. Now, the disc utility made it through the partitioning (I think?) but seems to be stuck at about 50% with the message "Waiting for the disks to reappear". Is this normal? or, am I experiencing the curse-of-the-6g/s-in-the-optibay problem? Thanks for the assistance!

Sadly, you'll need to find a different drive (SATA II 3.0 Gb/s).
