I understand the physical process of replacing the hard drive. My question is how difficult it will be to move my content (including programs and data) to the new hard drive once it is installed?

You should first make a backup of anything important onto an external HD (FireWire if you can find one).
Once that is done you typically connect a universal adapter via USB to your new HD. Then using some cloning software copying over to your new drive what you have. Then you check the new drive to make sure it boots up your system. Then you swap over the drives.
