Ram Memory upgrade and enquiry

Hi,

I wouldn't be asking this if I just knew my computer category, e.g. EMC xxxx. but I can't find that number.

A have two questions:

First of all, I have the following iMac 20-inch Early 2008 (Intel Core 2 Duo) 8,1 with 1GB DDR2 SDRAM, I want to buy two RAM cards that will work on it.

Second. I read that 6GB is the limit, if true, is it possible to put in one slot 2GB and in another 4GB, if not what is the limit?

Thanks a lot.

First here's the EveryMac Specs of your system.

Your system has only two memory module slots so you will need to remove one or both of your current modules to fit in larger modules.

I suspect you have 2GB (two 1GB modules), You could replace both modules going upto 4GB (two 2GB modules, You could also go upto 6GB (one 2GB and one 4GB module). But before you do that make sure your firmware is upto date. Follow this Apple TN: EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.

As to what your system requires:

  • PC2-6400, Unbuffered, Nonparity, 200-pin, 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Refer to this Apple TN: iMac: How to remove or install memory

Here's the memory needed from Crucial as a reference:

  • 2GB module P/N CT25664AC800
  • 4GB module P/N CT51264AC800
