iPhone 5 will not swipe to unlock but digitizer works?

Hey everyone,

So I've fixed plenty of iPhones myself but I ran into a pretty unique problem recently. To be clear, I'm working with an AT&T iPhone 5 that won't swipe to unlock the phone. At this point you're probably thinking its a faulty digitizer which definitely could be the issue but there's more.

Unfortunately, the iPhone's lock button isn't working either so the assisted touch button is currently displayed on the screen. I only bring this point up because I am able to freely move this button to any location on the screen with no problems. In other words, I know the digitizer and LCD are working but I still cannot swipe to unlock the phone. Also, I'm unable to swipe upwards from the bottom of the screen to open the airplane/wifi menu or swipe downwards to display the calendar/appointments menu.

Has anyone else encountered this?! If so, any information would help! I hope the description of my issue was clear but let me know if I'm missing anything. Thanks!

Yes, I have encountered this problem today. I got my iPhone turned on again at AT&T because I had lost it for more than 3 months and needed a new SIM card. Now, later on in the day, it won't let me type or swipe. My home button and on/off button work. I hope there is an inexpensive way to fix this, free I'm hoping.

The answer was not really an answer and did not help me so I kept experamenting and happened on a solution which may or may not help but here it is.

I simply held down the power and home buttons at the same time until the apple appeared on the screen and then released the buttons. It appeared not to do anything but since restarts are typically slow I waited about 2 minutes and then pressed only the power button. About 30 seconds later the apple reappeared, the gear started turning and the system reloaded. My iPhone 5 now appears to be working properly as the swipe to unlock and all other buttons a once again working. Hope this helps someone. Bill

I have an iPhone 5C. I tried that solution....hold Power Button + Home button at the same time. It worked. Thank you very much for sharing!

Worked without having to power down phone.

Thank you, Thank you, thank you, I am lost without my IPhone. Your solution worked perfectly. Now, why doesn't Apple have this solution in their instruction manual for troubleshooting.

this resolution worked perfectly... i had found a variety of solutions to the specific issue i was having and this was the only one that was consistently repeated throughout the different search routes. i am very thankful and appreciative that you posted this information. (further detail about the resolved issue before the solution was found: the touch screen aspect was not being recognized when the phone was in the locked setting but i was able to pull down and drag up the top and bottom menus but unable to pull or drag them back. the home button was the only way to go back to the locked screen. i was able to access the settings app through Siri command to 'Open Accessibility'. Everything regarding the touch screen and the phone worked just fine until the phone went into screen lock; the phone was back to not responding to the touch screen option. I would like to know why and/or what causes this issue to in the first place. Thank you again for posting this life saving (technology saving) post!! @RonSzam

Ok let me add this

I work for a repair shop and replaced my iPhone 5 screen 2 weeks ago already on 9.2 and it worked great for couple weeks then the touch started to move by itself and would take 10 secs to unlock so I couldn't answer calls

I cleaned and checked the cable was connected ok but nothing helped untill I removed the screen covered the touch connector with flux and did a solder reflow plus clean again

Now the touch works fine when using the phone untill it's left locked for more then 5mins then the swipe to unlock will fail the 1st try 2 sec delay but before repair it would take 10 secs to work so it's better and shows no fault in normal use

It's odd how a screen can work fine untill locked and not be software maybe it's both I did try the 9.2.1 beta it didn't help

I had an iPhone 5c with this problem. The phone responded to touch by surrounding the text on the screen with a box and speaking the word, or words, displayed. This is an accessibility feature named VoiceOver. There was no response to swiping the screen.

On Apple's support site I found a post by hayblacksupport, with this solution. Tap the home button three times rapidly. This is a shortcut for turning accessibility features on or off. This home button shortcut can be turned on or off in settings.

Are you sure you can drag the button of assistant touch anywhere on the screen? My iPhone has the same problem before, but it turns out a tiny part of the screen unresponding. And I have to replace the old one with a new screen.

There is no solution that I have found for the new iOS update on Apple devices. 9.2 is faulty and they lied about improvements and bug fixes. I would love to help everybody out on Christmas Eve or the holidays, but sadly, I have not found any solutions. If I do find a solution, I will alert ya'll.

Hope ya'll have a "Happy Christmas'" and a "Happy New Year"! Don't forget to be thankful for your gifts, even if they aren't helpful or you don't like it. Appreciate the effort.

MY screen had a white line going down the screen. I opened it up and unplugged the digitizer as well as other cables. Every time I closed the phone the line would come back but I noticed the line wasn't there before I completely closed the screen down in the phone. These cables are very sensitive to certain positions or certain torque on them...

I maneuvered the cables a few times and the screen would do weird things. and move around on its own. I would clean and maneuver the digitizer cables again. I'm not sure if the digitizer fixes this or just maneuvering the cables does.

I ended up loosening one of the screws on the metal plate that covers the cables and the white line was finally gone. I guess the cales had to much force on them. If your going to open your own phone you may want to tinker with the cables and the screws to see if it helps until you get them in a position that wrks best.

My phone works now but periodically will not swipe I wait a few seconds and it will work correctly .I may have to go back in a tighten or loosen something....

Phone is also locked and not much working on my IPHONE . It seems as though Apple must be aware of the problem since it is their Application update that creates the software problem. After researching the issue the numerous remedies listed are either the same solution, or to expect a hardware problem. The phone I own is less than two years old and I doubt it is a hardware issue. The problem is reported after the user application update has been completed. I believe since Apple is asking users to update their APPS and the problem then occurs they would have a solution. I will be taking the phone to a store (if they tell me it's hardware I will not be purchasing another Apple) to see if they will stand behind their software and hardware created problems. Someone had previously complained a bug is used in order for consumers to upgrade their phone. ( I would hope this would not be the case since APPLE is a large brand with little stock option for the average consumer.)
