Why do I loose video at random times while it's running?

I just received my 2008 iMac and for some reason, my video blacks out and the Mac still runs. I can't tell if it falls asleep as my setting prevent that. I happens shortly after boot most times. I reset my smc as well as my pram and that caused it to stop for several days until it started happening as frequent as before. It is all stock except for a 2 gig ram stick for a total of 3. When it retains video it runs great. I'm just not sure what to do as I've never had to troubleshoot something like this before.

Update

I pulled the new ram stick since I was thinking the video problem started shortly, it has had no effect, I have screen sharing on but it doesn't seem to work when the video goes out but I can connect enough to view the hard drive contents so I guess that rules out a random sleeping issue, but I've noticed putting the brightness on the very minimum keeps the prob from happening so far, I will further test

Update 2 12/30

I just installed a new inverter and the screen still blacks out even before login. I have tested doing a screen share with another Mac to see what I can see while it blacked, and my iMac is not responsive during the screen share. Is this thing just a lost cause?

It sounds like you are getting a picture on your external monitor. This sounds to me like an inverter failure. With a serial number we can identify your exact machine and get you to the correct part number.

I must of misspoken, I haven't tried using an external monitor yet. I use teamviewer to fix my dads computer remotely so I set the iMac on it to be controlled via my iPhone, it just went black and did so on my phone at the same time and when I disconnected I was unable to reconnect. I'm not sure of my serial number as I doubt it will stay on long enough for me to grab it but is it a imac8,1 A1224. Could this be a logo board problem and not a inverter problem? Thanks for all of ur time thus far.

Look on the bottom on the stand for machine specs. Hook it up to an external monitor to help isolate the problem.

Model number: A1224, emc: 2210, LZE5 is the last four of the serial, I don't have the parts to try the external monitor trick, is there anything else I can try while I source the means to do so? Thanks again

The Apple part #922-8507 inverter board can be found for under $30, and is your best bet. The repair is easy.

You really think that is the culprit? I thought it was as well but being unable to use screen share from another Mac to see my iMacs screen when it blacks out confuses me as well as teamviewer not working right when it's black as well, I wouldn't see how all that is related but it's my best bet so far, thanks for all your help this far
