A color spinning pinwheel (beach ball) has started to appear quite frequently. Everything stops till it disappears. What's the fix ? MacBook Pro 15" Unibody 2.53 GHz Mid 2009

First do an external backup of your data if you can.
My bet would be a defective HD/IR cable. They can also destroy the hard drive. Start up holding down the option key and select the recovery drive, if you have upgraded your operating system.
See if you can run Disk Utilities.
