No You can only use a GPU that was used by Apple As OEM so if you had an AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics processor with 2 GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory you could put in an AMD Radeon R9 M295X with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory if you could find one at a reasonable price. Also selling your old card wouldn't be too profitable as only someone with a damaged card would be a potential buyer. The machines are so new a damaged GPU should be a warranty repair .

You'll have EFI (aka bios) and extension (aka driver) if you attempt to put just any old GPU in any Apple computer.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it accepted.

The AMD Radeon R9 is the best performing GPU for your machine. For other machines/GPUS see this site.

But, what about putting in it a GPU from a 2017 Model like Pro 580 ? Wouldn‘t it be a good solution for every 5K iMac user instead of buying the brandnew 2017 5K?

“You'll have EFI (aka bios) and extension (aka driver) if you attempt to put just any old GPU in any Apple computer.”

I’m not tracking here. Are you saying there will be issues with the efi and extension? This process isn’t plug and play?

Also, I’m looking at a machine with the 2048 MB AMD Radeon R9 M380. Is the 390 the only upgrade option? Thanks for the help!
