Reset button doesn't work?

My N64's reset button does not work. The system itself works just fine, but pressing the reset button does nothing. Any reason why this is happening?

My reset switch only worked 1 out of 10 times or so. I opened the console and sprayed 99% ipa directly into the reset switch (Using a spray bottle.. Generously.. I mean, spraying right into the thing). I let it evaporate out and now it works every time. I noticed it feels more “firm” now… Before, it seemed easier to press Reset, now it feels stronger. I guess some inner mechanism was getting jammed up. I also cleaned up the whole system while it was apart (particularly the pins around the cartridge slot.. My games weren’t always loading up the first time, and sometimes had small glitches/frame skips… This solved all of that) .. I hope this can help anyone with this issue.

This is likely caused by corrosion within the switch itself. If you have a multimeter, switch it to resistance mode, depress the reset switch, and check the resistance between the legs on either side of the switch. Note that some legs of the switch will always have no/low resistance between each other (even when the switch is not depressed) because they are always connected/on the same side of the switch.

If, when the switch is pressed, you find that there is very high resistance across a pair of legs, the switch is corroded inside. You can desolder, and disassemble the switch to clean it out. You can also try squirting some isopropyl alcohol down the top of the switch, and repeatedly pressing it to try to knock some corrosion loose, but this won’t work as well as disassembling the switch and directly cleaning the contacts inside.

There could also be a corroded/damaged trace connected to the reset button. check for/follow continuity from the switch to components it is supposed to connect to. If there is no continuity, you may need to repair the trace with some fine, enameled wire (also called ‘magnet wire’).

Woah, thank you so much for the detailed answer! Holy crap, I was finishing my last year of middle school when I asked this! I got an email notification from iFixIt out of nowhere, lol.

I do have a multimeter and soldering station, so I can put your fix to use. I'll try this out on the weekend when I have time! (Because yes, I still have the same N64 and I never managed to fix this issue myself, unfortunately.)

Thanks again - I'll reply back on how it went, when I can.

The reason why ur reset button will not work is because the reset switch is not getting a single to the leaf switch try to move the leaf switch to the left but not to hard and not to close u want them to hit each other when u press the reset button. I just did this to one of my n64 and it work and also u need a small flat head screw driver on the right side their is a line mark that u need to push up but don't do that to hard either otherwise u might brake something and that is how u get to the leaf switch. Good luck. This might be the problem but I'm not 100% sure if this will work for u but try it.
