RAM and SSD upgrade: Did I forget something?

Hi,

I want to upgrade my father's iMac 20" mid 2007 (EMC 2133):

- Add RAM (from 2x 1Gb to 2x 2Gb)

- Change the HD for a SSD

I feel comfortable for the RAM but since I've never replaced a hard disk before, I just want to make sure I've got everything I need before I order:

- 2x 2Gb Ram chip

- Correct screwdrivers, a spudger and duty suction cups (I'll buy it from iFixit)

- A SSD

- A 2.5' to 3.5' drive adapter

Do I need anything else? Some cable? I'm not sure at all about the drive adapter: is it what I need?

Thank you in advance.

Here's the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow to get to the HD: iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Hard Drive Replacement.

Given the age of the system I would recommend going with a SSHD (hybrid) vs a SSD. Review this: Seagate Desktop SSHD. You'll gain the speed of the SSD but also have the storage space of a HD. A 256GB SSD is on the small side as the only drive in the system.

You do have a few issues when going with a SSD as the your systems SATA port is only SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) so what ever drive you put in it must run at this I/O speed. The Seagate drive as an example auto senses the SATA port of the system and sets its self to it. The second issue is the way SSD's work you'll need to install a special driver to enable TRIM services and you will likely need to upgrade the OS as well.

Make sure you put back the thermal sensor onto the new drive (HD or SSD). You'll encounter issues with the SMC services (Fans) if you fail to reattach it.

OK the RAM is the next issue here:

You may want to push your system all the way to 6 GB using one 4 GB module and one 2 GB module.

The last thing here is making sure you have updated your systems firmware before doing anything. Follow this Apple T/N: EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.

Thank you very much,

I'm sorry I didn't express myself better, your answer was great but I already knew everything you explained... Hopefully this will be usefull for someone else.

I've already seen the tutorial too and this will help me a lot.

My father only uses like 60 Gb on his iMac so storage space is definitely not an issue and I prefer to use a real SSD. For the RAM, I'll add 2x 2Gb just because it's cheaper than 6 Gb.

The thing I'm still a little confused about is the 3.5 inch to 2.5 inch drive adapter. Will any of these adapters fit? How can I know if the one I linked will fit in the iMac?

It's okay, I've found an adapter that should fit. Thank you for the help.
