Antenna designed for adaptability?

Any indication that the main antenna has any tuning built in to be more efficient for different bands?

"tuning" ??

i doubt that - they more likely calculated (w=c/f) the optimum out of that metal strip. there are many different wavelenghts to handle and anything "tuned" would a: use more power and b: would use more space.

antennas in cell phones are passive - tuning would only make bad things worse - the only way to get a better "reception" is a higher transmission power - but that's limited to 2w on gsm 850/900 and 1w on gsm 1800/1900 networks (if the reception is good, the phones are operating in the 0.1-0.2w range)

However, you can improve the impedance match of an antenna by changing the load. If the finger is causing the antenna to be de-tuned, you could fix that by loading the antenna differently and match the new impedance.

From ars

"Rumors have suggested that Apple has an update to iOS 4 coming soon that may address the issue, and an e-mail from Steve Jobs to a frustrated customer seems to support that theory. A reader indicated to us via e-mail that Apple may be using digitally adjustable solid state capacitors to tune the iPhone 4's antennas, which if true would make a software fix possible."

sorry to say that - but software adjusting isn't anything new, we did this on any nokia phone since the late 90s and it was done on the the phone generations bofore that too. but uncontrolled adjusting is dangerous, you need to check those settings while adjusting. it's easier than it seems ;-)
