How do I fix the slow start up?

I know this system is out of date for most people, but it's one of my prized possessions. I have noticed these past few years (I just got the inspiration today-as I was excited to play) that once you turn on the Play Station it takes maybe 1 1/2 minutes to show anything on the screen, in which case I press all the buttons on the TV to make sure the PS is actually hooked up to it. I do it almost every time, and I would like to stop myself by fixing the problem. Or is my system simply getting old? (Do they get old? ) Or this a common thing with any system that can readily be fixed? Thanks to anyone who reads this :)
